Really appreciated it and you all helped me make my mind up. I went with the majority opinion, democracy works that way don’t it? It’s nice knowing I’ve got more heads than my own and I’m glad you babies will be there to support my decision.

I took the job.
Within 20 minutes, I was offered an interview with Canada’s largest employer for a similar position only in digital and not print media. When you’re not looking, eh?

Just to make it clear, I am not a n00b in the ad biz. At 23 years old, I’ve already been at it for 2 and a half years having had 2 assistant positions working under me. Both several years my senior. The issue isn’t about getting a job period. It’s about having already paid (some) dues and thinking about the next step. The last thing I want is being stuck in a rut for stability’s sake but at this point in (tough economic) time, it’d be a nice luxury to have some help while I go figure out/conquer my dream job.

Which would probably involve boys in bands, the internet, partying networking and biking to work.
Now go! Make it happen, darlings.

congrats! I know I told you not to take it but — yikes– the person posting under me sort of made me think twice about my “great” advice. I’m notoriously unrealistic/stupidly not empathetic when it comes to money. Sorry bout that.
But I’m glad you see yourself striking out on your own some day — people DO make it work, right?

I wasn’t at a point where I was hurting for money. In fact I had about 2 more months time before I’d have to start worrying, but realistically I have not taken a cent from my parents since I was 20 and I also have zero debt and I wasn’t going to entertain the idea of accruing any.
As for making it on my own it would have to be like I said something that involves bands, booze and biking hahaha

Bands, booze, biking … Event planner!
You would be awesome as this! I had an internship doing this and it was a blast (but didn’t really suit me in the end because I am quite shy and introverted).

You should be really proud of not taking any money from them for years and not having debt.

I TRY to live on my own earnings as well but I admit that I rarely accomplish this. I’m really very lucky, but I shouldn’t take it for granted.
Whoever that was that posted underneath me gave me a smack-down I suppose I deserved!
I hope you don’t have to start working a lot soon — I still want to live vicariously through your parties, pics and girl-about-townness!

I find it hard to believe you are a “seasoned” ad girl, and are still in bed @ 8 45 on a monday morning. Seriously, be careful what you write, esp.calling those starting out ” noobs”, and having two positons ” Under you, who are senior” Grow the F up. No one would want to work with someone who behaved so entiltled.

annadvp decided this was worth saying on Aug 10 09 at 4:50 pm

Nowhere have I said I deemed myself “seasoned”. I was not working today, 8:45 is early for me on a day that I can technically sleep in. When do you wake up on a weekend?
N00b is my way of trying to use netspeak in a cheeky way, I’m not calling others out for having “trust funds” and “no experience” as you are. I am not being “entitled” when I say I DO have work experience, it’s simply a fact any employer can see clearly on my resumé. I am not a new grad nor new to the ad industry. I’m proud of having worked my way to a point where I was enabled to give direction to others, if you are trying to humble me by suggesting I settle and regress in position just to ‘pay my dues’ then I would question your career advice.

Good for you for taking the new job plunge and for being an independent lady. As someone who has also managed others while in her early 20s and who now finds herself working with colleagues at least ten years her senior (and making more $$$ than them), I say forget the haters and keep conquering the world.

Good for you, Sass! I hope this new job will lead you to where you want to be.

P.S. You need to tell me how you got to where you are one day. How did you get into ad sales? How did you move up?

Carmen decided this was worth saying on Aug 10 09 at 10:25 pm

Awesome, congrats on the new job! Small firms aren’t necessarily a bad thing by the way. They got lots of potential for growth, tend to not be as bogged down with the corporate politics, and above all, with company expansion you get a lot of opportunity for movement and increased responsibility — probably much more so than if you jumped into an already large corporation that has pretty much already hit critical mass. Just my two cents. On that note, I got to go find me a job now (sigh).

Lindsay: Thanks for the comment, Lindsay. Really brightened up my day!
Carmen: We’ll see, it can only go up form here right? I landed the job through a friend right out of college and just worked my butt off, promoted within a year.
Scott: It’s a change, definitely. Though I’ll have to give it some time before I make up my mind. Yes, you go find yerself a great job so Princess can have more cooking sets!

Congrats doll! I’m glad to hear you feel like you made the right decision, I’m sure you’re going to blow them away :)

I think the word n00b is funny and quite descriptive. In my firm (law) we call them “baby lawyers”. I like newbs or noobs or n00bs way better. And yeah there are some advantages at small firms, like direct client contact.

You hit the nail on the head when you said you worked your butt off. Thats the key. Work hard and thou shall be rewarded. Its simple, but amazing how many folks don’t want to.

Good luck.
